Wallace is 2 yrs. old and is an amazing dog who has gone through a lot in his life. He first came to us after being found chained to a pole in a park in January, with frostbite and other scars all over his face. He was emaciated and only weighed 45 pounds, he is now up to 63 pounds! Understandably, he was very shut down and unsure of who he could trust. This lead to him initially showing some guardedness and growling at times. He has been doing amazingly well with building trust and growling less-he will occasionally still when he has a very high value item or if he is communicating that he is done wanting pets. He does very well with our resident dog and would probably love a doggie playmate in the home but he does still need to work on his resource guarding. So would do best either in a home where he can be the only animal or with someone confident and familiar with navigating resource guarding. The good news is that Wallace is SUPER smart and wants to please, and he loves HARD! He already knows sit, gentle, kennel (does great in his kennel) and is doing great with his recall. He also has already had a training session with a professional trainer who raved about how well he feels Wallace is doing and will continue to do. He has another session already scheduled in March that will continue to be helpful for the resource guarding and confidence building. Wallace is absolutely so loveable and would be staying with us if it weren’t for the prey drive with the cats. We have been having to take turns with him being kenneled and the cats being locked in a room, so it really doesn’t feel fair to him and his ability to keep making progress. He is a playful guy who has bursts of energy and then loves to snuggle up on the couch-so would love to be in a home where he can have more freedom without the distraction of some pesky kitties. We are also happy to share the training tips we have gotten and that have been working really well for him and building lots of trust with his humans. Oh and Wallace is already neutered and totally potty and kenneled trained! He hasn’t met any kids but has gotten to meet several new adults and gets excited every time. He may do best in a home with no kids or older kids just because of needing to keep being mindful of the resource guarding and he is a strong guy that sometimes gets excited and forgets how strong he is
