Tomato is the sweetest little senior gal you will ever meet and SO READY to find her perfect forever family. Don’t let the fact that she is a senior (estimated 7-8) fool you, because this girl is all puppy at heart! Tomato came into rescue with a name honoring her (at the time) red, painful skin. Unbreakabull doesn’t know a lot about her life prior to rescue other than it has been very sad. Tomato was severely neglected, underweight, and in poor physical condition when she was found in January. She has spent a couple months healing with her foster family and is now ready to move on to her forever home. Tomato’s defining feature is her exuberant, happy-go-lucky personality. If it weren’t for some physical tell-tales, you would never expect she is the result of a very sad background. This girl is full of joy 24/7. She lives to be near her humans and getting scratches. She loves going for walks, chasing squirrels, chewing toys, and snoozing in the sunshine. And she gets so excited about her food that she quivers and chatters her teeth; personality is a 10/10. Tomato doesn’t know a stranger, ADORES the human infant in her foster home, and lived with other dogs both prior to and in rescue. Tomato has had most of her medical needs addressed in rescue, but her forever family should be prepared for her continued care. She has a benign heart condition that will need to be monitored yearly. It is suspected that her skin condition is the result of living with chronic, unaddressed allergies. She is now thriving with the daily use of Apoquel (an oral medication that will ultimately be given once a day), hydrolyzed dog food, and regular medicated baths (right now her foster bathes her every 2-3 days, and the long-term goal is once per week). She will need bloodwork every 6 months for as long as she continues Apoquel. Tomato’s ideal home is versatile. Her energy requirements are low, and she doesn’t jump (other than some stationary bunny hops whenever it’s time for food). She walks well on a leash, and she has NEVER had an accident in her foster home or displayed any destructive habits. Tomato crates with minimal complaint and is used to sleeping in her crate at night. She is excellent around children and would probably do well with cats. She has done well with the dog in her foster home, but her priority is people and she would probably be just as happy as an only dog. Note--because she loves her people so much, she’s still learning to share them. Her forever home should be comfortable with knowing there have been 2 instances of resource guarding her humans to the foster dog in the house (over several months), so this could be an area that will need work if there are other dogs in the home. Because she’s so happy-go-lucky, she can also come on a bit strong and would do best around other reasonably tolerant dogs. This girl deserves the good life from now on. Could she be the little ray of sunshine that lights up your day?
