ADIRA!

  • GOOD with all dogs, but leash reactive when walking, GOOD with all kids, NO cats

Hi there everyone!! My name is Adira, which means strength in Hebrew, and like my name, and a beautiful diamond found in the rough, I am strong and beautiful. My name was one that I was given upon coming to the rescue because no one knows what my name was. I came into the shelter without much of a verbal story and no name. The shelter I was in didn’t give dogs names, so I sat for awhile without a name, and my physical reactions told a very sad story. Let me tell you the rough part, and then I will tell you how I am developing the strength of a rare diamond found buried in the rubble. I am 1.5 years old and am just a peanut of a girl at about 45#; I won’t get much bigger. I am grateful to be out of the shelter and into an amazing home. When I first came to the rescue, if voices were raised or a hand was raised, I got scared and thought I was going to get hit. I would cower and submissively go potty on the floor. It has taken a bit, but I realize now that touch is good, and I am like chocolate candy in your hand on a hot, sunny day, I melt. A soft voice is so soothing to me and reassures me that you mean love, and I just can’t get enough of love and attention that is positive and comforting. Like seriously, I crave it like, well like chocolate candy. I love to cuddle so much!! Other than playing, it’s my next favorite thing to do! Now that my story is out of the way, let me tell you about all the things that I am working on and who I am becoming, because they are AMAZING!!! I am a ball of energy, but in a very good way! I love to play, I love other dogs, and they give me so much confidence to be an awesome girl. Since, I have so much energy, it’s recommended that I be with kiddos at least around 5. I did great when I met the rescue director’s 2 year old, but I’m still a busy girl, and I just love to run around and play and wouldn’t want to knock anyone over. I am learning that my kennel is a safe place. I will go it in and whine for a bit, but then I settle and do great! I tell you when I have to go potty so you can let me outside, and I am learning to walk on a leash and be comfortable with that. When I am walking on a leash and see another dog, I get super excited and start barking and lunging. It sounds aggressive, but my foster says I am just so excited to play with the other dogs that it comes off as aggression. We are learning that when I walk I need to just have my space and my handler has to be in complete control and correct me when we are walking. Reassuring me as we are passing another dog is helping, but I am still a bit excitable when I am on a leash. Off leash, I have absolutely not a single issue with another dog, but something about the leash changes how I react. I just want to play so badly and don’t like the leash not allowing me to do that. I’m a work in progress on this, but it’s going to take a patient, firm, and consistent leader to help me. I am strong in spirit, I am a survivor, I am loving, and I will be the best friend that you have ever had. So, if you like diamonds and/or chocolate, please head over and fill out my application because I am both sweet like chocolate and strong like a diamond, and you won’t be disappointed!! With all my strength and sweet love, Adira (updated 04/20/20)
